It was like the Big Shoot Out at the OK Corral, as members of Master Gohring's school of Tai Chi & Kung-Fu got ready to face-off during Master Gohring's 2nd Taiji Classic Tournament! It felt like being in the Wild, Wild West, and what better setting than Buffalo Billiard's located in down town Austin's historic 6th Street district. This year the Kung-Fu students were included in this years tournament and they put on a Great show. There were three rings at this years tournament, two for Tai Chi and a Big one for Kung-Fu. There was the Form for both Tai Chi and Kung-Fu, Sparring for the Kung-Fu and Push-Hands for Tai Chi. This Tournament was very well Organized by Mr Leu and Mr. Trudeau. And all of the Judging was Top notch!! Any problems that were encountered, were fairly and quickly fixed. The number of competitors twice as much as last years tournament. The competition among the competitors was at a high level and very clean. Which allowed everyone to enjoy themselves.  There was food, drink and fun to had by all who were there. You could not help but to have a great time in the environment that was created by everyone at the tournament.  Next years tournament may be held at Buffalo Billiard's. And it may have weapons forms for both Tai Chi and Kung-Fu. Not that will be something to get ready for!

This years Tai Chi Classic was outstanding!  Mr. Leu and Mr. Trudeau did a great job getting everything organized and even improved upon from last year.  The three rings, two for Tai Chi and one for Kung Fu, was a real bonus and superb for giving a true feel for what the Dallas Tai Chi Legacy is like.  We even got done with everything at an earlier than anticipated hour.  Thank you for supporting this event and giving us students an opportunity to compete locally with each other.

Respectfully,

Ms T

Hello,

Here's what I saw judging at the Classic: At least on ring 2 (beginner / intermediate forms, push hands): 1.  All 3 of us judges (we could have used more, since Ring 3 had 5 total judges) pretty much scored / rated the competitors consistently; all within a point.  It was interesting that we pretty much saw each one do a decent form.  But , we'd have liked a clarification on which sash was rated in which division. What I am saying is, some Blue sashes were bumped down to Beginner, while some green went to Intermediate.  Maybe the decision next year is to have competitors not wear sashes; and / or the head judge announce the division. 2.  We (ring 2 judges) were told to round up the average scores to 1 decimal place; while Ring 3 decided to average to 2 decimal places.  Meaning - if the average score in Ring 3 was 9.15 - they kept it as 9.15, while we were told to make such a score  9.2.

What a great location for this year's tournament! The
heart of downtown Austin at a very cool pool hall!
Parking was not an issue, due to the time of day & how
cool for us who were walking around on 6th street in
our red school shirts!
The event was bigger with Kung Fu this year & more
participants, which means this thing is taking off &
will get even bigger next year. Thankfully the school
has a good amount of people who have the time,
knowledge & enthusiasm for putting the whole thing
together so well. Thanks to all who had a hand in that
& to Master Gohring for having this really great
school.

Hi Master Gohring:

My compliments to Jim and Richard for doing a great job of organizing the event.  Everyone seemed to be very enthusiastic and energized.

I thoroughly enjoyed my first experience of judging the Taiji forms and Kung Fu sparring which gave more insight of what goes on at the school.  What I enjoyed the most, was to once again compete in push hands with Ana and the opportunity to visit with everyone.  Since I was able to judge Taiji Forms and Kung Fu sparring as well as compete in push hands, time went by very quickly.

I look forward to next year!

Alicia
